Indiana State Fair

In which I celebrate the year of the pig...

by Hitty Amelia, a Hoosier Hitty

Once a year, my adopted humans make a trip to the state fair to support local 4-H kids, to spend a day appreciating the fine state of Indiana, and to eat massive quantities of fried foods.

This year, the Indiana State Fair was presented by the Indiana Pork Farmers -- that's right, people, we were celebrating the year of the pig. In honor of these fine piggy friends, the fair had many special offerings. Right next to the "deep fried oreos" booth was a vendor offering "chocolate covered bacon." Another vendor offered "country-fried bacon with pork gravy dipping sauce." Although, like most Hoosiers my adopted humans believe bacon makes everything really tasty, they chose not to partake in these "delicacies" and stuck with their normal fair of tenderloin sandwiches, philly cheesesteak sandwiches, grilled corn, funnel cake, kettle corn, shaved ice, and a seemingly endless supply of lemon shakeups.

Here I am in one of the exhibit buildings posing with some of the creations of the "Circle City Carvers"-- an Indianapolis based woodcarving club. I was happy to share my story with the men at the booth. Can you believe that they had never heard of me?

Amanda's son Robbie's favorite part of the day was playing on the farm machinery on display near the FFA (Future Farmer's of America) building.

I even found this giant machinery fascinating. WOW!

Before we left for the day, Amanda picked up some postcards to mail to Shirley, adopted human of the Sunny State Hitties. Shirley loves to get postcards! And although we did not purchase them, we giggled over souvenirs such as Bacon-flavored lip balm, breath mints, and gummy candies. There were even bandaids shaped like bacon strips.

So celebrate summer in this year of the pig! If you take your Hitty to your State Fair, please share with us at the Hitty Travel doll site. We'd love to hear your stories!

HI Hitty Amelia:
Sometimes it is best that Hittys can NOT taste things, like chocolate covered bacon!
You could have come and visited me and my "Mom" at the Pioneer Our Land Pavillion just north of the gift shop with the big pigs on top! She and me, Hitty May were spinning inside in the A/C at the Weavers and Spinners of Indiana booth. "Mom" has been going there for about 12 years, now.
Next weekend is our "Pirate Weekend" at Monroe Reservoir near Bloomington and then Mom will be spinning there then back at the fair the last weekend, spinning again. I will be safe at the Pirate weekend, Dad has a cannon!
Come visit me!
